Ayamelum (Awka North LGA)-Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Chief Paul Odenigbo has urged communities to warnings to move to holding centres when flooding comes calling.
Odenigbo said this during sensitisation a programmes organised by SEMA at Ayamelum and Awka North Local Government Areas (LGA).
The executive secretary was represented by Executive Assistant to the Governor on SEMA, Mr Emeka Obinwa.
The ES noted that sensitisation would also be carried out in other LGAs. These are Anambra East and West, Ogbaru, Onitsha North and South, Ihiala and Ekwusigo.
He urged the people to heed to flood warning as predicted by Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA).
You need to be prepared and be at alert as flooding does not give notice or ring a bell before coming. It can come at midnight when people may be asleep.
The holding centres for Ayamelum will be at LG Head Quarters at Anaku, Omor Health Centre, Ifite Ogwari Health, Skills Acquisition Centre, Health Centre Igbakwu and Umueje.
For Awka North LGA, the holding centres will be at Agueke Primary School, Ugbenu, Central School, Ugbene and Central School Oba Ofemmili.”
Odenigbo while assuring the people of safety, noted that Anambra State Government would provide necessary facilities such as food, shelter, water and other essentials until the flood subsided.
He enjoined them not to look back at damages caused by floodwaters but first save lives before property. It is he who is a life that can purchase property and rebuild houses.
The reason for this sensitisation is because the state government has seen the need for people to be aware of the coming floodwaters and take steps to save life.
The flood prediction is not pleasant as flooding will be disastrous; as people are advised to leave their homes before floodwaters comes, to avoid casualties. A stitch in time saves nine,” he emphasised.
Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Anambra Governor on Fire and Emergency, Mr Anthony Achebe said People should check for signs, to know when to move to safe places like holding centres provided by government.
He urged them not to expect a 5-Star hotel arrangements as holding centres were temporary places until flooding subsided, saying that life was more important at that moment.
The Traditional Ruler, Amanuke Community, Awka North LGA, Igwe Alphonsus Chijindu thanked government for managing the situation and taking care of flood-affected people.
Igwe Chijindu then pleaded with government to seek permanent solutions to flooding as it was causing damages to the economy.
President-General (PG), Umumbo Community, Ayamelum LGA, Mr Bonaventure Chukwubuikem suggested that compensation should be hastened.
