NASS Set to pass the 2020 budget in early December – Spokesman

ABUJA The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Media and Public Affairs Hon. Benjamin Kalu had said that the National Assembly was ready to pass the 2020 budget in early December to ensure that the annual budget cycle is returned to January-December annually.

Briefing the House Press Corps, Hon. Kalu said that the leadership of the National Assembly is committed to an early passage of the budget and also hinted of its resolve to return the budget to a January-December cycle.

Earlier on, Hon. Benjamin Kalu had said that the House will immediately suspend its plenary to consider the N10.76 trn 2020 Appropriation Bill laid at a joint sitting of the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.

He told journalists that the House last week’s inauguration of the 105 Standing Committees of the House by the Speaker Hon.Femi Gbajabimilla was in the pursuit of this noble objective.

The lawmaker also said that the laying of the N10.76 trn budget by the President without the Committees in place would have like building a house without pillars

He informed that the House has set up a timeline on the passage of the budget and hinted that sectoral debate on the budget is scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

He added that the Ministries, Departments and Agencies MDAs of the federal government are expected to appear at the Committees of both chambers of the apex legislature to defend their estimates before the end of October.
