Post: National Assembly Vows to Protect Nigerians Abroad Amid Rising Xenophobia

Abuja:The Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Power, Rep. Joshua Gana (PDP-Niger), has reiterated the National Assembly’s dedication to ensuring the safety and dignity of Nigerians living overseas. This commitment was emphasized during a conference addressing the impact of migration on African citizens, organized by the African Diaspora Union (AFRIDU), in response to increasing xenophobic incidents targeting Nigerians.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Rep. Gana, representing Lavun/Mokwa/Edati Federal Constituency of Niger State, highlighted the legislative body’s duty to safeguard Nigerian citizens’ rights and interests globally. He noted that the recent decision to halt legislative engagements with South Africa is part of efforts to bolster Nigeria’s diplomatic stance and protect its citizens.

Gana called for collaboration and skills exchange to foster mutual growth, urging government agencies to formulate supportive policies for Nigerians pursuing opportunities abroad. He also committed to advocating for the integration of the conference’s outcomes into future policy decisions.

Prof. Chidiebere Ogbu, President of AFRIDU, stressed the need for African governments to shield migrants from trafficking and xenophobia. He criticized the treatment of migration as mere statistics, underscoring the human aspect behind each migrant’s journey. He also called for stringent measures against fraudulent agents exploiting African migrants.

Ogbu urged African countries to address xenophobic violence against migrants, emphasizing the importance of lawful and humane immigration enforcement. He also recommended introducing migration education in schools to inform young Africans about potential risks and rights related to migration.

The conference also featured remarks from Mr. Jerry Egemba, Imo State’s Commissioner for Industry, Mines and Solid Minerals, who encouraged Africans to resist discrimination and urged the diaspora to return and contribute to Africa’s development.
