Abuja: The newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Adm. Idi Abbas, has committed to leading a decisive, disciplined, and technology-driven Nigerian Navy focused on securing the nation’s maritime domain and enhancing the blue economy. Abbas made this commitment as he assumed command as the 23rd Chief of the Naval Staff in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Abbas pledged to tackle crude oil theft, sea robbery, illegal bunkering, and other maritime crimes that threaten national security and economic stability. He emphasized the importance of addressing these issues decisively to protect the economy and national energy security. Abbas outlined his leadership’s focus on strengthening maritime security, enhancing operational capability through fleet renewal and technology, improving personnel welfare, and fostering inter-agency and international collaboration.
Abbas also expressed his gratitude to his predecessor, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, for laying a solid foundation for progress, describing Ogalla’s leadership as visionary and exemplary. He urged officers, ratings, and civilian staff to rededicate themselves to the Navy’s core values of integrity, professionalism, and teamwork, assuring that the service under his command would remain professional, accountable, and welfare-driven.
The outgoing CNS, Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, highlighted the accomplishments achieved during his tenure, stating that the Navy had become stronger and more capable of securing the nation’s maritime environment. Ogalla noted significant strides in operational activities, including the absence of piracy incidents and the success of Operation Delta Sanity, which led to the deactivation of illegal refining sites and arrests of suspects.
Ogalla further discussed the Navy’s advancements in fleet recapitalization with the acquisition of various vessels, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as infrastructure improvements and policy reforms. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and other stakeholders for their support and urged continued loyalty to the Constitution and cooperation with his successor, Rear Admiral Ibrahim Abbas.
