Post: NCC Calls for Strategic Leadership and Digital Transformation to Tackle Piracy

Badagry: The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has called for effective leadership, digital transformation, and intelligent enforcement to combat piracy. The Managing Director of NCC, Dr. John Asein, emphasized the need for strategic measures during a management retreat on ‘Strategic Leadership, Digital Transformation and Effective Copyright Enforcement in a Knowledge-Driven Economy’, held at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON).

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Asein highlighted that effective enforcement requires intelligence, collaboration, speed, and strategic partnerships to address the challenges posed by modern-day piracy, which is organized, borderless, and technology-driven. He stressed that enforcement needs to be strategic to earn respect and drive compliance, especially as digital violations easily cross borders and artificial intelligence disrupts traditional notions of creativity and authorship.

Dr. Asein further elaborated that digital transformation should not only involve technology acquisition or process automation but should also enhance work coordination, enforcement, and value delivery. He advocated for the use of data-driven decisions and technology to improve transparency and efficiency while ensuring that artificial intelligence supports enforcement intelligence and institutional effectiveness.

He underscored the importance of strategic leadership, which requires imagination, adaptability, and discipline, urging leaders to go beyond routine administration. Dr. Asein stated that institutions in the digital age must become proactive navigators of change, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence.

In her remarks, Mrs. Funke Adepoju, Director-General of ASCON, emphasized that the greatest value in any economy lies in ideas, creativity, knowledge, and intellectual property. She highlighted the evolving challenges of copyright enforcement in the digital realm, including websites, streaming platforms, and social media.

Adepoju called for leadership that understands the digital ecosystem and the need for smarter, faster, and more technology-driven enforcement strategies. She praised NCC’s commitment to capacity building, noting it as a reflection of their dedication to institutional growth.

The retreat served as an opportunity for participants to rethink the future of the commission in a rapidly changing world and commit to leadership that is thoughtful in strategy, disciplined in execution, and bold in innovation.
