NCC educates consumers on protection against cybercrimes

The Nigerian Communications Commission NCC has restated it’s commitment to check the menace of cyber-crime activities in the country, hence the need to enlighten consumers on the role to play in order to protect themselves against rising wave of the scourge.

Speaking at the 107th Edition of the Consumer Outreach Programme, COP, held in Lafiya Nassarawa state, North Central Nigeria, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, said that criminal and illegal activities on the cyber space is on the rise, thus the need for adequate consumer education.

The Deputy Director Consumer Affairs Bureau at NCC Ismail Adedigba, who spoke on behalf of the EVC said the event themed: Mitigating Effects of Cyber-crimes: The Roles of Telecom Consumers, is aimed at enlightening the consumers on the threats of cyber-crime, it various forms and measures required of consumers to be protected from cyber-criminals and hackers.

Adedigba, said the Commission was in the process of establishing an Internet Industry Code of Practice, whose object is to come up with robust framework to sanitise the cyber space for telecom consumers.

The internet code is a regulatory intervention expected to secure the country’s cyberspace against imminent threats from cyber attacks as well as addressing issues such as online child protection, privacy and data protection among others.

He therefore charged telecom service consumers to play their role in effectively.

Let me emphasise at this juncture that while the regulatory intervention and other initiatives are on-going to sanitize our internet space, telecoms consumers must play their role. Thus, the need for you all to take this meeting seriously as we educate you on what your roles should be in minimizing the effect of cyber-crime.

On the total eradication of cyber-criminals from the country’s cyberspace he said, To say that you are going to eradicate cyber-crime is a tall ambition because you cannot eradicate it but what you can do is to educate the public so they will not fall victim of cyber-crime activities. People are looking for loopholes to perpetrate crime. If people are inform they will know how to protect themselves. We educate the public through our consumer conservation and advocacy.

In her opening remarks the Director Consumer Affairs Bureau Mrs Felicia Onwuegbuchulam, NCC said businesses and individuals in every country currently rely on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for their day-to-day activities, where Internet is playing a key role in inter-connectivity of devices.

It is a common knowledge that smartphone and other smart devices used by telecom consumers are a storehouse of data carrying sensitive information about their owners, their families, businesses, associates and daily interactions as well as financial transactions details. Admittedly, the Internet touches almost all aspects of our lives as telecom consumers, she said.

She emphasized the need for continuous consumer education and awareness as one of the most effective ways to protect telecom consumers.

The Commission is committed to using its various outreach programmes to embark on series of awareness campaigns with a view to keeping consumers well informed on the risks associated with being online, enlightening them on safety measures to be taken once they use connected devices as simple as feature phone, smartphones and other more sophisticated Internet-enabled devices, she added.

Representatives of telecoms operators also took time to enlighten their consumers on efforts being made by them and role expected of the consumers to play to be safe when online on their various networks.
