Abuja: Chief Sam Onuigbo, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has emphasized the need for top politicians of Igbo descent to come together and engage in negotiations with other ethnic groups to secure favorable political arrangements for the 2027 elections. Onuigbo articulated this viewpoint during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Nigeria is gearing up for its next general election in 2027, with various political alignments and realignments already underway. Noteworthy among these developments is the defection of several governors, including Mr. Peter Mbah of Enugu State, to the APC. The APC currently holds power at the federal level and controls most states across the country, along with both chambers of the National Assembly.
Onuigbo, who served as a representative for Ikwuano/Umuahia-North and South in the House of Representatives, stressed the importance of negotiation and consultation to effectively serve the interests of the Igbo people within Nigeria’s political landscape. He highlighted the Igbo community’s dedication to the nation’s unity and economic growth, as evidenced by their widespread investments throughout Nigeria.
Onuigbo stated that the Igbo people’s willingness to invest across the nation demonstrates their belief in a unified and prosperous Nigeria. He further acknowledged the significant contributions of the Igbo ethnic group to the country’s development.
In addition, Onuigbo commended President Bola Tinubu for the establishment of the South East Development Commission, which aims to address the region’s challenges stemming from the civil war. He noted that this initiative should have been implemented immediately after the war ended.
Onuigbo also voiced his support for the creation of an additional state in the southeast zone, arguing that it is inequitable for other regions to have six states while the South East has only five.
Addressing recent coups in West Africa, Onuigbo remarked that the agitation for change is driven by the demand for good governance. He called on Nigerians to back President Bola Tinubu’s administration and its reforms to ensure that the benefits of democracy are delivered to the populace.
