Abuja: The Niger Delta Youth Network (NDYN) has announced the formation of a Project Monitoring and Accountability Committee aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability, and the successful completion of development projects in the Niger Delta region. According to News Agency of Nigeria, NDYN has also called upon the Federal Government, the Senate President, the National Assembly, and the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) management to instruct contractors working on projects in the Niger Delta to resume their duties at the sites within the next 14 days.
In a statement released in Abuja, Scott Ogunseri, the National President of NDYN, emphasized that the initiative was launched in response to the abandonment and sluggish progress of infrastructure projects across the Niger Delta, despite government funding. Ogunseri highlighted several key projects that have been affected, including the Lokoja-Benin road, East-West road, Eleme road, and Ogoni-Eket road, among other critical infrastructure developments in the region.
Ogunseri expressed concern over the abandonment of these essential roads, describing them as economic lifelines for both the Niger Delta and Nigeria. He warned that their neglect poses significant security risks to the local population and stressed the dissatisfaction of Niger Delta youths with the current situation. He urged immediate action to address these issues.
Furthermore, Ogunseri appealed to the Senate President, who hails from the region, to leverage his position to ensure that the NNPC promptly addresses the concerns raised. He underscored the importance of the Renewed Hope Agenda being realized in the Niger Delta and reiterated NDYN’s commitment to acknowledging progress while holding parties accountable for any neglect or abandonment.
Ogunseri concluded by emphasizing the necessity for accountability and development in the region, asserting that every government-approved fund for the Niger Delta must be utilized effectively.
