New Overseer for Redeemed church as Adeboye retires

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye has announced the appointment of a new Overseer for Nigeria as he retires.

Pastor Joshua Obayemi is the new Overseer, Pastor Johnson Odesola-the Secretary while Pastor J.A. Adeyokunnu is the Treasurer of the Church. Pastor Obayemi has been the one in charge of salaries and pensions of Pastors while Odesola is the Assistant General Overseer in charge of Administration and Personnel.

Pastor Adeboye made the shocking announcement at the Annual Ministers’ Thanksgiving in Simawa, Ogun State on Saturday, just two months to his 75th birthday celebration.

Rational for stepping down

He said that the development came as a result of the new regulations from the Nigerian government.

With new rule, the likes of me (Adeboye), Pastor Williams Kumuyi of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry and Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Ministries will have to go.

So Pastor Obayemi is the new Overseer. RCCG is in over 193 countries of the world and I know they will not reject me when I visit, he stated.

Party politics

He challenged the ministers to go back home, involve themselves in politics and be very active especially at the ward level.

Pastor Enoch Adeboye was born on March 2, 1942 in Ifewara, Osun State. He married Foluke, now 68 in 1967. The marriage is blessed with four children.

Pastor Adeboye assumed the leadership of the RCCG Worldwide in March 1981 at the age of 36. As at the time, the church had just established the first overseas parish in Ghana.

He had his B.Sc. in Mathematics at University of Nigeria Nsukka and subsequently got his PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Lagos, worked as a lecturer in Mathematics at the universities of Lagos and Ilorin, before going into full time priesthood in 1984.

Pastor Adeboye remains the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God Worldwide while Pastor Joshua Obayemi is the head of the church in Nigeria.
