Abuja: Roberto Mengoni, the Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, has highlighted Nigeria’s position as one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments, attributing this status to rapid city growth, innovation, and expansive opportunities within the architecture and design sectors. He emphasized that the country’s cities are increasingly focusing on sustainable urban development, which is paving the way for infrastructure expansion and improved living standards through innovative urban solutions.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mengoni shared these insights during the inaugural Italian Design Day event in Abuja, organized in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA). He explained that such initiatives allow the embassy to display a significant aspect of Italian culture, underscoring Italy’s historical excellence in architecture and design on a global scale.
Mengoni further noted that Italian architects, designers, and companies have consistently set global standards by merging functionality, innovation, and aesthetic value in architecture, interior, and industrial design sectors. He referenced renowned architect Renzo Piano to emphasize the responsibility that comes with architecture, especially in the face of challenges like sustainability and housing deficits due to rapid urbanization worldwide.
Highlighting Nigeria’s pivotal role in this global shift, Mengoni pointed out cities like Abuja and Lagos as emerging hubs of innovation and entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, Yemi Shola-Adebiyi, Chairperson of NIA, discussed the benefits of the collaboration for students, providing them international exposure and engagement with esteemed Italian architects, thereby enhancing their knowledge and skills in architecture and design.
Shola-Adebiyi mentioned that the Italian Design Day, marking its debut in Abuja, offers a platform for building meaningful partnerships and creative synergies. She revealed that the event, traditionally held in Lagos, was brought to Abuja to benefit architecture students in the capital, featuring activities like a masterclass that included mentorship programs for university students.
Additionally, visiting architects from Parasite 2.0 Studio delivered presentations on transforming temporary spaces into permanent architectural solutions, showcasing experimental design approaches. This initiative aims to foster collaboration and professional exchanges between Nigerian students and Italian architects, contributing to the students’ professional growth and global perspective in the field.
