Nigeria Nominates Dr Taoheed Elias for ICJ Seat

Abuja: Nigeria has formally presented Dr. Taoheed Elias as its candidate for the International Court of Justice (ICJ), reaffirming the country’s commitment to upholding international law and strengthening Africa’s voice in global justice. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, made the presentation to the diplomatic community and Nigerians, describing Dr. Elias as a jurist of ‘exceptional academic insight, institutional experience, and judicial temperament.’

According to Voice of Nigeria, Tuggar emphasized that the nomination underscores Nigeria’s belief in multilateralism and the rule of law at a time when global disputes are becoming increasingly complex. He noted, “This candidacy is not about Nigeria alone. It is about ensuring Africa retains its rightful presence in the global rule of law, maintaining balance, and reaffirming that all regions must share in the custodianship of global justice.” Tuggar further highlighted Nigeria’s respect for international legal decisions, stating that the nation has consistently respected and implemented judgments from international courts.

In his remarks, Dr. Taoheed Elias pledged to serve the ICJ with neutrality, objectivity, and fairness. Dr. Elias highlighted three pillars of his candidacy: his academic expertise in international law, his 20 years of experience as a lawyer within the United Nations system, and his judicial service. He expressed his commitment to respect for the Court, which he described as the principal chapter of the United Nations, and to service based on international law and UN principles.

Dr. Elias, an international lawyer and former ad-hoc judge of the ICJ, will serve a nine-year term from 2027 to 2036 if elected. Nigeria has had only three representatives at the ICJ, with the seat remaining vacant since 1994. The latest nomination reflects the country’s renewed drive to strengthen its role in global legal and diplomatic affairs.
