Tunisia: Nigeria’s Men Volleyball team clinched a spot in the quarter-finals of the ongoing African Men’s Volleyball Championships with a narrow 3-2 victory over Algeria in their last group match on Thursday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the match, held in Tunisia, was a tense five-set battle with Nigeria emerging victorious. The Algerian team initially gained an advantage by winning the first set 25-23. However, Nigeria responded with determination, claiming the second set 25-19, before losing the third set 25-21. In a display of resilience, Nigeria came back to win the fourth set 25-20 and sealed the match with a 15-12 victory in the fifth set.
Ryan Masajedi, the coach of the Nigerian team, expressed satisfaction with his players’ performance. He acknowledged the initial setback in the first set but praised the team’s ability to recover and secure the win. “I am impressed with the way the players picked up after losing the first set. The set was in our hands but the Algerians were lucky it went in
their favour,” Masajedi stated.
The victory over Algeria, following their initial win against Chad, positions Nigeria as one of the strong contenders in the championship. Masajedi noted, “The victory against Algeria has cemented us amongst the favourites at the Nations Championship.”
The 2026 CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship, held in Tunis, Tunisia, continues to unfold, with matches scheduled from September 13 to September 25.
