Abuja:The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has introduced its first Unified Training Manual and standardized professional course badges for its training institutions across the country.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the launch of the new manual is intended to enhance uniformity, professionalism, and modern capacity development within the service’s training framework. The Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, described this initiative as a significant milestone that will bolster professionalism and institutional identity in personnel training.
The new training manual replaces the 2019 edition and has been updated to incorporate contemporary correctional practices, address emerging security challenges, and meet professional demands. It provides a unified framework for training across various levels, disciplines, and specialized areas within the service, covering command courses, commissioned officers’ courses, basic recruit and Chief Corrections Assistants courses, along with specialized and refresher courses.
Nwakuche emphasized that the manual was developed internally by NCoS personnel, which marks a departure from the past reliance on external bodies for training materials. This internally crafted curriculum is expected to reinforce institutional ownership and preserve professional knowledge within the service. He also highlighted that the new course badges symbolize professional identity and accomplishment, urging officers to uphold the discipline and values they represent.
The initiative is part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening institutional capacity, promoting training excellence, and building a modern correctional workforce. As part of the ceremony, Nwakuche, along with Deputy Controllers-General, received and were decorated with the newly unveiled course badges to recognize their professional advancement.
Deputy Controller-General in charge of Training and Staff Development, DCG Olanrewaju Amoran, stated that the manual serves as a comprehensive training resource for the service, drawing on the expertise of experienced personnel to ensure content reflects institutional experience and operational realities. This will serve as a common reference for instructors and trainees, promoting consistency in course delivery and enhancing professional training across NCoS institutions. The initiative is also expected to support continuous professional development by providing standardized learning materials throughout officers’ careers.
Chairman of the manual review committee and DCG in charge of Human Resources Directorate, Ado Sale, emphasized that the course badges are professional distinctions that can only be awarded by commandants of NCoS training institutions, underscoring their significance beyond mere ceremonial accessories.
The event also included the presentation of an Award of Excellence to Nwakuche by the review committee for his leadership and support for the initiative, as well as plaques and certificates of recognition to committee members for their contributions to the development of the curriculum and training manuals.
