NIGERIAN COURT SENTENCES DUO TO DEATH FOR CATTLE RUSTLING, HOMICIDE

ABUJA, The High Court in the south-central Nigerian state of Kogi has sentenced two cattle rustlers — Muhammed Lawal Jauro and Yusuf Sanni — to death for cattle rustling and culpable homicide.

The convicts were arraigned before Justice Josiah Majebi on three counts of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide under various sections of the Penal Code.

The prosecution told the court that following a report of a murder and theft of cows from a farm in Okene , the duo were arrested in Kwara State, while their leader, Awaijo Wetti, escaped and is still at large. The Prosecution submitted that thw two who had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges, later pleaded guilty.

In his judgment Thursday, Justice Majebi declared that the confessions were weighty and admissible in determining the case against the two. The confessions according to the judge, are graphic and direct and he said the convicts stole the cows after killing the owner, one Haruna.

He held that the prosecution had satisfactorily established that the death of the deceased was caused by the convicts as there was a nexus between the acts of the accused persons and the death of the deceased”.

The judge sentenced the two accused to 28 years each on the first three charges and to death by hanging on the fourth charge of culpable homicide.
