Ibadan:The Nigerian Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers (NIHTE) has called on the government to implement Artificial Intelligence and intelligent systems in transport management to align with international standards.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, NIHTE’s Ibadan Chapter Chairman, Lawal Olalekan, emphasized the potential benefits of AI and Intelligent Transport Management Systems during his inauguration at the institution’s annual conference. Olalekan highlighted that these technologies could enhance road safety, efficiency, and sustainability by utilizing real-time data from cameras, sensors, and GPS to manage traffic congestion and improve signal control.
Olalekan also pointed out that implementing these systems would decrease travel time, fuel consumption, and road accidents due to human error. Additionally, it would generate significant government revenue from traffic fines and improved regulation enforcement. He promised to prioritize member welfare, training, and collaboration with industry stakeholders during his tenure.
Dr. Adeolu Odutayo, a guest lecturer from Olabisi Onabanjo University, underscored the inadequacies of manual traffic enforcement and advocated for AI-based solutions to reduce infractions and enhance compliance with traffic regulations. He urged the government to develop policies for AI adoption while ensuring data privacy protection.
NIHTE’s National Chairman, Dr. Bola Mudashiru, however, noted that technology must be complemented by improving motorists’ behavior to effectively curb traffic violations. He called for investment in Intelligent Transport Systems, including AI-powered cameras and Automated Number Plate Recognition, to enforce compliance and improve road discipline. The conference also featured the inauguration of new executives and recognition of distinguished members.
