Nigerian Leader Commits to Maritime Development


Lagos: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to developing Nigeria’s maritime sector as a viable alternative to fossil energy. The President emphasized this commitment during a meeting with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.



According to Voice of Nigeria, the President highlighted that the recent signing of the National Maritime Policy was a deliberate effort to implement global best practices and enhance the competitiveness of Nigeria’s maritime industry. The National Maritime Policy aims to position the sector as a key player in the nation’s economic development.



In his remarks, the IMO Secretary-General acknowledged the Federal Government of Nigeria’s achievements in maritime safety and security, especially in protecting the Gulf of Guinea. He pledged the United Nations agency’s continued collaboration with Nigeria to maintain the progress achieved in the sector.



The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, led the IMO Secretary-General and other industry leaders in the engagement. Notable attendees included PS Olufemi Oloruntola, Director General of NIMASA; Dr. Dayo Mobereola, the MD of NPA; Dr. Abubaker Dansoho; and MD NIWA Bola Oyebamiji.
