NIGERIAN PRESIDENT ORDERS PROBE INTO ALLEGED CORRUPTION

ABUJA, President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami to investigate the Secretary to the Government and other government officials accused of wrongdoing.

Malam Garba Shehu, the president’s Senior Special Assistant for Media and Publicity, said in a Facebook posting Sunday that the president, who expressed concern over the increasing media reports alleging corruption against certain individuals in government, has vowed to prosecute any government official found wanting in the discharge of his or her responsibility.

The attention of the Presidency has been drawn to a number of reports in the media in which various accusations of corruption have been levelled against some top officials in the Administration,” said Shehu.

In that regard, President Buhari has instructed the Attorney General of the Federation to investigate the involvement of any top government officials accused of any wrong-doing. If any of them are liable they will not escape prosecution.”

Some government officials, including Secretary to the Government Babachir Lawal and acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu, have been accused of various alleged wrong-doings by the Senate.

The Senate on Thursday rejected the nomination of Magu as substantive chairman of the EFCC, attributing its decision to damaging security reports against him.

Hajiya Naja’atu Muhammed, a member of the ruling APC party, jas also called on President Buhari to remove some of his aides who are being accused of various cases of corrupt practices.
