Nigerians receive free train rides on Lagos-Ibadan rail

Nigerian government has commenced three months free train ride on Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail line as part of test run of the project.

It would be recalled that the $1.5b project which started in June 2017 was in collaboration between the Nigerian and Chinese governments.

Addressing journalists after the official test run to Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi said the train has commenced operation and would run for three months for free services.

Amaechi said the Lagos-ibadan standard gauge rail project is the third in Nigeria to start operation after the Warri-Itakpe and Abuja-kaduna the second.

He said the rail line has three tunnels from Lagos to Ibadan and two of it falls within Ogun State while the last one is in Ibadan.

According to him, the train would be working thrice daily and all those working in Lagos can leave early and get to the place of work before those that are living in Lagos. The government that has done this needs to be compensated by voting them back so as to continue the project from Ibadan to Kano.

Nobel Laureate, prof.Wole Soyinka who expressed concern of the new development said the project is good enterprise which it’s planet or rocket should go to the next planet.

Prof. Soyinka stated that all fingers should be kept on ground looking for the opportunities for all traders,commuters etc thriving as the project is creative and not do or die but do and do occasion.

Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun commended the efforts put together by the Nigerian and Chinese governments on the achievement of the life changing project.

Amosun said another history has just been made since about years ago and the project has brought the Nigeria to the Comity of the developed nations.

He noted that the project would revolutionize Nigeria with emerging global economic development, creation of employment and reduces pressure on roads among other advantages.

The governor emphasised that agricultural products would be moved within 29 minutes which roads cannot even try.

The event attracted many eminent personalities among whom are Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, other Royal fathers, Senators, members of House of Representative, government functionaries, Captains of industry,MD and staff of Railway Corporation, Vice president BZone of NUJ.
