Abuja: Nigerians have been urged to work towards building an enduring peace, unity, tranquillity, love, and stability, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or political party affiliation, as the world prepares to celebrate the 2025 International Day of Peace on September 21.
According to Voice of Nigeria, the call was made by the Commandant General of the National Unity and Peace Corps (NUPEC), Dr. Chinedu Nneji, during a press briefing to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Peace in Abuja. Dr. Nneji remarked that every individual has specific roles to play, starting from peacekeepers on the front lines to community members and students alike, to ensure peaceful coexistence among the citizens.
Dr. Nneji emphasized that everyone who enjoys a peaceful environment must contribute to its upkeep. He highlighted the theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Act now for a peaceful world’, as a wake-up call for individuals, society, and communities to actively engage and participate in efforts to foster peace, understanding, and nonviolence.
He further stressed the importance of challenging violence, hate, and discrimination by speaking out against these social vices. Dr. Nneji encouraged embracing diversity and practicing respect for different voices, opinions, faiths, and perspectives to foster understanding and cooperation in community affairs.
The Commandant General also urged people to verify information before sharing to avoid spreading fake news and hate speech. He advocated for discussions on non-violence, disarmament, and global cooperation to fight social vices.
Dr. Nneji warned about the potential adverse effects of advancements in science and technology, particularly artificial intelligence, if not properly managed. He emphasized the need for society to act against the negative impacts of scientific innovations.
