Nigeria’s President Mourns Victims of Kogi Boat Accident

Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat accident that claimed several lives in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State. Describing the incident as ‘shocking and unfortunate’, President Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, noted that it was painful that the deceased lost their lives in the course of their legitimate struggle to earn a decent living.

According to Voice of Nigeria, the President commended the courage of the first responders who rushed to the accident scene, while directing federal, state, and local emergency agencies to intensify rescue and relief efforts for survivors and the families of the deceased. Reiterating his call for safety consciousness in water transportation, President Tinubu urged boat operators and regulators to prioritise passenger safety above financial considerations, warning that neglect of safety protocols continues to put innocent lives at risk.

He prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and wished the injured a swift recovery, assuring the people of Kogi State that his administration stands in solidarity with them during this moment of grief. The victims of the tragedy were traders travelling from Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State to Ilushi market in Edo State.
