Abuja: Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, has felicitated Vice-President Kashim Shettima on his 60th birthday, describing his political journey as remarkable. Sulaiman’s birthday message, shared with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), emphasized the vice-president’s extensive career in banking, governance, and legislation, culminating in his current role.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Shettima was born in Maiduguri on September 2, 1966. He pursued Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri and later obtained a master’s degree from the University of Ibadan. His professional journey began in banking, where he achieved the position of General Manager at Zenith Bank. Transitioning to public service, Shettima served as a commissioner in various strategic ministries.
As the governor of Borno from 2011, Shettima faced the challenge of insurgency while focusing on reconstruction, education, healthcare, agriculture, and human c
apital development in communities affected by Boko Haram. Sulaiman highlighted that Shettima’s administration founded Borno State University, now known as Kashim Ibrahim University, showcasing that investment in education was feasible even amid insecurity and social disruption.
The director-general noted that since becoming vice-president, Shettima had chaired the National Economic Council, contributing significantly to discussions on investment, food security, agriculture, human capital, and economic diversification on a national level. Shettima has consistently advocated for a one trillion dollar economy and emphasized the need for investment beyond crude oil, as well as the importance of participation in artificial intelligence and technological innovation.
“At 60, we celebrate not merely the office he occupies but the journey, experience, and commitment that prepared him for successive responsibilities,” Sulaiman remarked. He prayed for Allah to preserve the vice-president, enhance his wisdom, and stren
gthen him for greater service, while also wishing for Nigeria’s peace, prosperity, and enduring development.
