NIOB Pushes for Nationwide Enforcement of Building Regulations

Abuja: The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) has called for the nationwide enforcement of building laws to enhance construction standards and safety across the country. The initiative includes the establishment of a skill laboratory project in Lugbe, which aims to assist stakeholders in testing materials during construction.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the NIOB president emphasized the need for greater involvement of professionals in structural and town planning processes. He expressed concerns over the Nigerian Building Code (NBC), which has not been passed by the Senate since its proposal in 2006. The code is crucial for setting standards related to design, construction, and maintenance of buildings.

Ewa, the NIOB president, highlighted that the NBC addresses important aspects such as structural integrity, fire safety, energy efficiency, and accessibility. He noted that the delay in passing these laws has allowed unqualified individuals to flourish in the industry, prompting some states to in
troduce their own regulations to prevent building collapses.
