No Helmet, No Riding on Highways: FRSC Warns Motorcyclists

Abuja: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Sector Command, has reiterated its commitment to arrest any motorcyclist riding on highways without crash helmets in the state. Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, FRSC State Sector Commander, gave the warning while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ibitoye stated that the corps has intensified efforts to arrest, impound, and prosecute motorcyclists on highways who are not wearing helmets. He highlighted that crashes involving motorcycles without helmets often result in severe injuries, including broken skulls, limbs, and thighs.

Ibitoye advised motorcyclists to avoid highways whenever possible, but if unavoidable, they should use crash helmets and refrain from competing with vehicles, particularly heavy ones. He emphasized the importance of yielding to vehicles to ensure personal safety.

The commander also reminded motorcyclists of the penalties for riding on highways without helmets, which include impoundment of the motorcycle and fines. However, he stressed that the primary concern is promoting helmet use and prioritizing safety.

Ibitoye urged traditionalists, religious leaders, and titleholders to abandon the practice of riding without helmets, noting that titles and religious status do not protect against accidents. He encouraged individuals to prioritize their safety over titles and to choose safer transportation options if unwilling to wear helmets.
