North-East Region Experiences Enhanced Security Due to Military Efforts

Maiduguri: The security situation in Nigeria’s North-East region has significantly improved, as highlighted by Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force, North East Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK). This development follows sustained counter-terrorism operations and enhanced cooperation among security agencies.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar stated in an interview that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have maintained operational control across the region, effectively restricting terrorist movements and cutting off their logistics, which previously fueled their terror campaigns. He noted that the ongoing insecurity in the North-East is connected to broader regional and global issues, including instability in the Sahel, the Middle East, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Maj.-Gen. Abubakar highlighted the increased use of armed drones and radio-controlled Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) by terrorists since November last year, attributing these trends to global technological proliferation linked to conflicts elsewhere. Despite these challenges, the Nigerian forces have retained strategic control, aiming to eliminate terrorists from strongholds such as Sambisa Forest and the Lake Chad Islands. Recent coordinated operations have achieved significant results, including the neutralization of 26 key terrorist commanders and the recovery of arms, ammunition, and vehicles.

The improved security has led to a resurgence of socio-economic activities in areas once under terrorist influence. Markets have reopened, schools are operational, and roads are now safe for the movement of goods and people. The Nigerian Army’s sustained pressure has restored public confidence, encouraging voluntary returns to ancestral homes under the Borno State Government’s resettlement framework.

Maj.-Gen. Abubakar emphasized that the disruption of terrorist logistics has been a turning point in the fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP. By severing supply chains, the military has crippled the terrorists’ capacity for prolonged engagements. Intelligence-led missions have disrupted enemy capabilities, with notable successes such as the July 2025 operation in Dikwa, where troops recovered over 50 IEDs and neutralized more than 257 terrorists.

While acknowledging reports of renewed attacks in some border communities, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar dismissed these as desperate attempts by terrorists to instill fear. He assured that adequate deployments have been made to strengthen control and prevent further incursions, especially in areas like Kirawa.

The military has also deployed additional troops and logistics assets to the Kirawa axis, including quick response teams and surveillance units. Improved coordination with the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and local security volunteers ensures that no area remains vulnerable. Maj.-Gen. Abubakar reiterated the Armed Forces’ commitment to achieving lasting peace in the region and urged residents to cooperate with the military by providing credible intelligence.

Community leaders in the affected areas have praised the military’s swift and decisive actions. Alhaji Bukar Modu, a community elder in Gwoza, expressed appreciation for the increased military presence, which has restored public confidence and allowed residents to resume normal activities. Mrs. Falmata Bakura, who recently returned from an IDP camp, commended the soldiers’ professional conduct, noting that their presence brings hope and a sense of security.
