NPFL: MFM FC beats Wikki Tourists 1-0

Mountain of Fire FC, MFM pulled off arguably, one of the most impressive victory this season to go top of the NPFL Group A after beating Wikki Tourists 1 0 at the Agege Stadium.

The keenly contested game could not produce a goal owing to good defensive display by both sides. MFM first attempt to break the deadlock was squandered by Adeniji Adewole whose bicycle kick in the box produced nothing.

Two more goal scoring opportunities for the home side were wasted when Akanni Elijah was twice brought down on 20 yard, but Adewole could not take the ball over the visitors wall. In what appeared to be their best opportunity came late in the first half after a good build up, but Michael Ohanu fired agonizingly close from the right corner of the box to end the first half goalless.

Wikki did create some chances of theirs though, but the lack of communication made the efforts come to naught.

The visitors started the second half stronger, creating more play, especially after Aminu Nuhu was brought out for Hassan Musa, and later Mohammed Mohammed was substituted for Ahmed Abdultaofik.

Despite Wikki’s resilience, MFM finally broke the deadlock in the 70th minutes of play when Chijioke Akunneto slotted in from the left angle after an excellent pull out from the far corner by Mubarak Said.

The Wikki boys did have the best chance of their from a pull out, but substitute, Abdultaofik headed over the bar from close range.

Sensing eminent defeat in the dying minutes of the game, a visibly frustrated Auwalu Zubairu occasionally tried to communicate with his Wikki lads to up their game, but a determined MFM were resolute to ensure the visiting team returned pointless. It added to Wikki woes as they have never had a clean sheet against their Lagos based counterparts.

The victory means the Lagos based team tare at the summit of Group A.

Commending his side for their exceptional display in the match day 6 game, Fidelis Ilechukwu said the players are good, but I think they a bit tired that was why they were not really good at finishing. That was what happened in our last game away that we could not pick a point there, but we would work on it. Our defense is a bit slow but we thank God for the hard fought victory

On his tradition of playing a totally unknown player in the person of Mubarak, Ilechukwu maintained it’s Fantastic! I told him suddenly yesterday that you are starting and son, I know you can make it happen. And after the game he said to me coach you said it.

Zubairu who rued over their poor finishing said a back room discussion and some changes will get a good result for the team in upcoming games.

According to him, that has been the case with Nigerian teams, not peculiar to my team alone.

We are work in progress, I think we will get there. Our departments are good but when it comes to scoring the sharpness is missing. This is not typical of my game, but like I told you we are work in progress.

The result means Wikki remain on 6 points.
