Post: NSCDC Strengthens Efforts Against Kidnapping and Banditry in Oyo

Ibadan:The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Command in Oyo has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying efforts to combat kidnapping and banditry in the state. This assurance was given by the NSCDC Commandant, Mr. Augustine Padonu, during a courtesy visit by the executives of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the state Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Ibadan.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the visit was aimed at appreciating the command’s role in the rescue of victims abducted in Oriire Local Government Area. Mr. Padonu highlighted that several incidents of kidnapping and banditry around the Old Oyo National Park have been allegedly carried out by foreign herders who settled in the forest under the pretext of mining activities.

The NSCDC has 78 Divisional offices and 11 Area commands throughout the state, alongside specialized teams such as the Agro-Rangers and Anti-terrorism units, particularly active in rural areas and farm settlements. The command has increased the number of Agro-Rangers operational bases in Saki and Oyo, enhancing their capacity to respond to the rising incidents of kidnapping. This expansion aims to block routes used by kidnappers, prevent criminal activities, and ensure the security of lives and property.

Mr. Padonu also mentioned that additional Special Forces have been deployed from Abuja to work with the command’s personnel in targeting kidnappers and other criminal elements. He emphasized the need for collaboration among security agencies, community leaders, the government, and journalists to effectively tackle insecurity in the state.

Journalists in Oyo were praised for their role in publicizing the activities of the NSCDC and other security agencies, with a call to avoid spreading fake news and to verify information before publication. The Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Mr. Yinka Adeniran, acknowledged the contributions of NSCDC personnel to security operations and assured continued support in public awareness efforts. Additionally, he informed Mr. Padonu of the chapel’s upcoming ‘Press Week’ in November, during which they plan to present him with an award.
