Abuja: The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has reaffirmed its dedication to protecting national critical assets, focusing on the security of telecom infrastructure. This commitment was highlighted during a meeting at the FCT Command headquarters in Abuja, led by the Commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu.
According to Voice of Nigeria, Dr. Odumosu expressed concerns regarding the lackadaisical attitude of some mast owners toward the security of their investments, which makes them vulnerable to vandalism. The meeting, initiated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), aimed to address the persistent issue of vandalism affecting telecom masts and towers nationwide.
Dr. Odumosu underscored the telecom sector’s significance to Nigeria’s socio-economic development, stating that any acts of sabotage or vandalism must be fervently opposed. He highlighted the potential national consequences of neglecting the protection of critical assets and infrastructure.
During routine patrols by the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) protection department, many sites were found unguarded, lacking security personnel and CCTV cameras. He urged telecom operators to enhance security measures to prevent unauthorized access by vandals.
Dr. Odumosu directed operators to engage licensed private guard companies within the FCT to ensure robust physical security and share credible intelligence to aid in apprehending vandals. He also requested detailed information about the sites and locations of masts and towers to facilitate regular patrols and surveillance.
As a lead agency in CNAI protection, the NSCDC is committed to providing round-the-clock surveillance and patrols. Dr. Odumosu emphasized the necessity of installing CCTV cameras for monitoring, insisting that future reports of site infractions must include pertinent CCTV footage.
Telecom stakeholders expressed gratitude for the meeting and pledged to collaborate closely with the NSCDC to enhance security around telecom facilities in the FCT.
