Abuja:The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, is pursuing a strategic media partnership with the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development to promote women’s empowerment and inclusion across Nigeria.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Council’s Chairperson, Ms. Grace Ike, discussed this initiative during a visit to the Centre’s Director-General, Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi. The partnership aims to advance women’s development through strategic media engagement, with a focus on highlighting women’s contributions to Nigeria’s national development.
Ms. Ike, as the first female chairperson of the Council, emphasized the need to document the contributions of Nigerian women, particularly those from grassroots, rural areas, and those with disabilities, which are often overlooked. She stated the importance of the Nigerian Women Hall of Fame as a living archive preserving national memory and inspiration.
She highlighted the media’s role in influencing public opinion, policy, and social change, advocating for joint strategies to ensure women’s issues receive sustained attention. Ms. Ike proposed initiatives such as regular features on women’s leadership, intergenerational dialogues, and inclusive coverage of all women, including those with disabilities.
Dr. Benjamins-Laniyi welcomed the proposal and outlined five immediate action areas for collaboration, including formalizing the media partnership framework and promoting gender-responsive journalism. She invited the NUJ to participate in upcoming events marking the Centre’s anniversary.
