Abuja: The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has concluded its open camp programme in Oklahoma, U.S., in preparation for the World Wrestling Championships later this year in Astana, Kazakhstan. This is contained in a statement by the NWF Head of Media, Promise Okotoko, on Monday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the training camp provided Nigerian wrestlers with valuable exposure and a competitive environment to sharpen their skills ahead of the global championship. The wrestlers had the opportunity to compete in dual meets against athletes from various NCAA Division I schools in the U.S., offering them a chance to test their strength against high-level opposition.
Nigeria’s Women’s Wrestling Head Coach, Akuh Purity, who guided the athletes through their time in camp, described the camping as a valuable training and preparatory experience. Purity emphasized that the team continues to intensify their training and remains fully focused on improving their performance. He remarked on the importance of the camp in assessing the current standing of the team as they prepare for the championship.
Purity further commented on the dedication and hard work of the female wrestlers, expressing the team’s commitment to making necessary improvements before the championship. The Nigerian Wrestling Team is aiming to return the country to a podium finish since their last success in 2023.
