Ile-ife: The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) has initiated an indefinite strike. This decision stems from unresolved issues regarding welfare and working conditions that affect the association’s members.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the strike began at 8:00 am on Monday, following resolutions made at an Emergency General Meeting held on June 20. The association released a communique, signed by President Dr. Jesunbo Martins and General Secretary Dr. Toyyeb Oladipo, outlining the reasons for the strike and the unmet demands of the doctors.
The association highlighted that the strike action was a result of the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum given to the hospital management. They expressed dissatisfaction with the management’s response dated June 17, which they claimed misrepresented facts and agreements between both parties regarding unresolved issues.
Among the demands, the doctors are seeking the restoration of call-duty meal provisions, free issuance of identity cards, allocation of available residential units, and inclusion in applicable allowances. They also demand the abolition of bench fees for resident doctors from accredited private teaching hospitals. The ARD has made it clear that the strike and accompanying peaceful protest will persist until their demands are adequately addressed.
