Imeko-Afon:Ogun The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has handed over a newly commissioned facility in Imeko-Afon, Ogun, to the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) to enhance quarantine services and control the spread of transboundary animal diseases.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Animal Resting and Quarantine Facility is part of L-PRES’s investment in improving animal health services, livestock infrastructure, and movement management. The facility provides a resting area for animals in transit, where they can access water and undergo mandatory veterinary inspections before continuing their journey.
Mr. Adams Ishiaku, the National Communications and ICT Specialist for L-PRES, stated that trained quarantine officers will manage the facility’s daily operations and its physical and digital systems. The facility is equipped with digital tools to record livestock movement, monitor operations, and track infrastructure and other assets.
The digital system offers a route and movement guide, providing information on livestock movement between the facility and established corridors. It also connects to national livestock route corridors, primary stock routes, and local movement paths, offering herders and traders information on available routes and resting points.
Ishiaku added that the digital system allows officers to monitor the condition and usage of the facility’s infrastructure and assets.
