Lagos: Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has expressed sadness over the death of veteran actor Olu Jacobs. In a condolence message, Mohammed stated that Nigeria has lost not only an accomplished actor but also a cultural icon whose talent and dignity projected the country’s creative excellence to the world. He described Jacobs’ passing as the end of an extraordinary chapter in Nigerian theatre, television, and film.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mohammed emphasized that for more than five decades, Olu Jacobs brought intelligence, depth, and authenticity to every role, leaving an imprint on generations of Nigerians and audiences abroad. Jacobs’ career journey from British stage and television to Nollywood demonstrated that Nigerian artistes could compete on a global scale. Mohammed highlighted Jacobs as a bridge between the old tradition of Nigerian theatre and the modern film industry.
He further noted Jacobs’ commitment to the growth of the creative sector, emphasizing his work and partnership with his wife, Joke Silva. Through training young performers, Jacobs contributed to building institutions and inspiring a new generation. Mohammed commented on how Jacobs’ career showcased the arts as a powerful tool for cultural diplomacy and national image-building. He remarked that Jacobs understood culture as one of Nigeria’s greatest assets, carrying the Nigerian story with him in every performance.
Mohammed extended his condolences to Joke Silva, the Jacobs family, the Nigerian creative community, and Jacobs’ admirers worldwide. He expressed that though the curtain has fallen on Jacobs’ earthly performance, his legacy will endure, wishing for God’s comfort for the family and eternal rest for Jacobs’ soul. Jacobs passed away on September 16 at the age of 84, with the announcement of his death made by his son, Olusoji, on behalf of the family.
