Omogho (Orumba North LGA)-Igwe Raphael Offor, Ide II of Omogho Community in Orumba North Local Government Area (LGA) has commended Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra State for infrastructure and Socio-Economic development of his community.
“We are also happy that you extended development to other communities across the old Aguata Division.’’
The traditional ruler made the commendation, while speaking at the flag off of the 2020 Community’s New Yam Festival held at his palace at Isiamaehi Village, Omogho.
He said that the governor’s massive investment in Agriculture raised the socio-economic standards of the people of his community and effectively wiped out youths’ restiveness.
“You know, we are an agrarian community; my people depend on the produce of the land to survive. Our rice, the popular Omogho Rice is a top of the range; my people make their living from cultivating rice in the arable lands that God has blessed us with.
“We thank our Governor for his various agricultural policies, which has greatly enhanced the economic conditions of the majority of our people who are mainly farmers,’’ the royal father said.
The monarch cited the NOBITECH Rice Mill located in the community and the “N20 million Community Choose Your Project Initiative’ as some of the projects that had reduced the local unemployment level in his community.
He, however, said that mechanised farming was the way to go in this modern era and then appealed to the state government under the leadership of Chief Obiano to assist the community with modern farming implements for them to go into full scale mechanised farming.
On the rating of Anambra State by the National Bureau of Statistics as the least in unemployment level among the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Igwe Offor said that it did not come to the people as a surprise as the governor had a clear-cut initiative on this.
“Every willing and available hands in all nooks and crannies of the state must be gainfully employed either in Agriculture, Industrial or Commercial sectors of the state’s economy.’’
He assured the governor of support of the entire people of Omogho to his administration, praying God to guide him in the choice of a successor who would be able to sustain the enviable level that his government placed Anambra State.
The traditional ruler thanked God for the peace prevailing in his community and for a good harvest expected this year and called on well-meaning individuals to think home and invest part of their wealth in their home communities.
In his own speech, the President-General (PG) of Omogho Community, Chief Chibuzo Anyanechi said that the New Yam festival always afforded the community an opportunity for stock-taking and a time to plan for the future.
Anyanechi thanked the governor for his love for the community, pledging the people’s support to the government.
Earlier in his Homily, at the Thanksgiving Mass to commemorate the event, the Parish Priest of St. Pius Catholic Church, Omogho, Rev. Fr. Cyril Okpala reminded Christians of the need to always show appreciation to God for all His blessings and favour.
The cleric said that celebration of New Yam was Biblical, referring to God’s injunctions to believers to bring to His Sanctuary, the first fruit of the harvest.
He counseled that people should not abuse the environment in such a way that it would bring negative happenings or influences on what sustained man, assuring that God would always stand with his people; those who trust in Him.
The event was attended by the four Obis (Traditional Leaders) of the four quarters that made up the Omogho Community Royal Cabinet Members, friends and well wishers.
The ceremony, which was conducted in strict observance of COVID-19 protocols, featured the cutting of roasted yams by the Igwe and masquerade displays.
The Director of Information in the Anambra State Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr Anthony Nweke and his wife, a princess of the kingdom were among dignitaries that attended the event.
