Omor/Umumbo bloody communal clash leaves many dead, with 300 injured, 50 missing

Anaku (Ayamelum LGA)-A timely intervention combined team of soldiers and police restored normalcy to Omor and Umunbo villages after a bloody communal clash

The two from Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra had clashed over some piece of land.

Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Uche Okafor, accompanied by heavily loaded military and mobile policemen intervened to quell the stormy situation.

The Speaker, who hails from Ifite-Ogwari, is the representative of Ayamelum in the Assembly.

The two villages are among the food producing communities in Anambra State, where rice and other grains were heavily produced.

However, no fewer than 300 farmers sustained various degrees of bullets and machete injuries during communal clash between the feuding communities LGA.

It was also gathered that some 50 persons were allegedly abducted during the bloody clash.

The squabble, which started during the last dry season, was initially nipped before it could snowball into major crises.

The current misunderstanding was a result of some unscrupulous elements among the farmers that instigated some to seek vengeance.

According to an eye witness, a breach of a gentleman’s agreement reached between the two monarchs of the two communities sometime last year has been exploited by rabble rousers to set off the offensive.

However, in an interview with some youths who witnessed the fight, claimed that some Umumbo farmers were the first to launch attack on Omar farmers.

Following a distress call from a traditional ruler simply known as, Igwe Calidon (Ezeaniukwu kingdom), some persons were apprehended.

It was reported that some appreciable number of houses, shops and rice mills belonging to Umumbo community were torched in the heat of the clash in Omor and environs.

People ran away from their houses for fear of being killed as both communities pushed toward each other in severe confrontational manner.

At the time police was drafted to the area, it was found that no fewer more than 50 persons were missing as a result of revenge mission.
