Onitsha-Promoters of the Onitsha City Marathon (OCM), Onitsha Business School (OBS), has been granted authorisation to stage the first Onitsha City Marathon.
The race has been scheduled to hold on Oct. 5 in the commercial city of Onitsha.
Proprietor of Business School, Olusegun Sogbesan, a professor, was presented certificates for the approved race by Agents of the Association of International Marathon Racers (AIMS) and World Athletics (IAAF).
A well known Marathon Organiser, Nigeria’s Yusuf Alli in Lagos, presented Sogbesan, the two certificates for the 10 kilometers and 21 kilometres races.
The 21 kilometres cover the half marathon, while the 10 kilometres represent a road race in the mode of Okpekpe Road race that has held in Okpekpe Town, Edo State in the last seven years.
The certificates authorises the Onitsha marathon organisers to simultaneously stage the two races in one. Those calibres of races are dominated by elite athletes coming from many parts of the world.
According to Chairman, Media and Publicity of the race, Philip Balepo explained that the certificates have a life span for five years.
This means that the organisers are authorised to run the events between now and 2023 within which the certificates will be due for renewal.”
Alli said this is the first time that certificates would be presented to an organiser ahead of the race.
Even the Okpekpe Road Race Promoter, Mike Itemuagbo, was present with the certificate a few years after commencement of the race.”
This is the first time in the history of Nigeria that a South East state, will be staging an AIMS/IAAF-certified international marathon race.
