Post: Over 2,200 Girls Join National Mathematics Competition


Abuja:More than 2,200 female students from public junior secondary schools across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are participating in the 2026 SDGs Girls Mathematics competition organized by the National Mathematical Centre (NMC).



According to News Agency of Nigeria, the announcement was made in a statement by Mr. Onyekachi Njoku, the Controller of Information and Public Relations at NMC. The participants, selected from Junior Secondary School II, are competing to enhance their mathematical knowledge and skills.



Njoku emphasized the integral role of Mathematics in scientific reasoning, technological advancement, innovation, economic development, and decision-making. The competition aims to promote excellence and provide equal educational opportunities, especially for girls, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals focused on quality education and gender equality.



The initiative seeks to identify and nurture young female talents in Mathematics, encouraging girls to excel in Mathematics-related fields. It also aims to build confidence, discover talents, and develop problem-solving skills, preparing the next generation of female mathematicians, scientists, engineers, educators, and innovators.



The programme reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting talent identification among girls, with state governments cooperating in the selection process. Njoku expressed confidence that the competition would continue to contribute significantly to Mathematics education and the empowerment of Nigerian girls.
