Abuja:Edo: The Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) has collaborated with Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc (OOPC) to empower 400 smallholder farmers in Edo through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Livelihood Project. This initiative aims to enhance agricultural productivity and economic opportunities for local farmers.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the announcement was made by Mr. Misan Sillo, Economic Development Manager of PIND, during a Green Field Day event for farmers in Udo and 16 surrounding communities. The project focuses on providing technical knowledge and improved agricultural practices via local service providers.
Sillo, represented by Mr. Tuoyo Blessing, Senior Adviser at PIND Foundation, emphasized the importance of practical engagement with improved agricultural practices, including climate-smart approaches, to ensure farmers adopt new methods. The Green Field Day allowed farmers to experience these practices firsthand.
The project encourages farmers to adopt and replicate improved practices to boost productivity and resilience. PIND’s strategy involves collaborating with technical and business service providers, input suppliers, financial institutions, market actors, and government bodies to create a sustainable agricultural market system.
Dr. Graham Hefer, Managing Director of Okomu Oil Palm Company, highlighted the company’s efforts to support local farmers since the inception of its small farmer program in 2021. Represented by Mr. Sam Aisien, Hefer reiterated the importance of practical agricultural development in empowering communities.
Chief Francis Ihama, speaking on behalf of the farmers, praised PIND and Okomu for their ongoing training and empowerment initiatives, which include the distribution of farm inputs such as 400 50kg bags of NPK 15:15 fertilizers, cassava stems, and herbicides.
