Police launch manhunt for fleeing foiled jailbreak suspects

BENIN CITY The Commissioner of Police in Edo State CP DanMallam Mohammed has said that a serious manhunt had been launched after other suspects involved in the foiled attack on Oko maximum prison in Edo State.

CP DanMallam disclosed this when he gave update on the arrest of four suspects alleged to have plotted to attack the facility with the intention to free some high profile inmates awaiting trial.

He explained further that the manhunt became necessary following confessions of those in police custody.

The suspects we arrested have given us vital information and they mentioned other persons involved, we must arrest them to face the law. CP DanMallam stated.

Meanwhile the reported case of security beefed up in and around the Oko Prison by its authorities in Edo State leaves much to be desired.

Our reporter’s visit to the complex yesterday however revealed no heightened security as the back of the facility still remained vulnerable to attack.

The floodlights installed to complement visibility and officers patrol of the vicinity are not functional.

It will be recalled that armed men had in August 2012 attacked the prison through the back wall freeing some high profile inmates in the operation.

Contacted, the Public Relations Officer for Prisons, Edo Command Mr Suleiman Aminu said all necessary security arrangements had been put in place around the prison.

Obvious and covert security have been put in place around the prison.

You may not have seen any officer in the tents behind the prison but I want to assure you that we are ready for anybody, anytime.

Take note that those who planned the attack have been arrested. Mr Aminu explained.
