Pre-election Violence Claims Six Lives In Effurun, Delta State

Warri The Pre-election violence that started in Effurun , Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, over ten days ago appears to have assumed a frightening dimension as no fewer than six persons are reported to have lost their lives in the early hours of Monday.

Nigerian Observer gathered that, the renewed crisis may have escalated beyond clashes between the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives’ Congress(APC); as there are reports that attempts are being made to topple the existing leaderships in the different communities in Effurun.

It was further gathered that Town criers had gone round the various communities in Effurun warning residents not ready to vote for one of the two major political parties, to in their own interest, relocate from the area.

A young man , simply identified as Onyema a non indigene who was active in community affairs was said to be among the dead. The victims were reported to have either been stabbed or shot in their homes in the wee hours of Monday.

It was alleged that some of the victims were killed by security personnel deployed to the area to maintain peace and orderliness in the wake of the renewed crisis.

The victims,four males and two females ( one of them who went to visit her boy friend) were killed around Jakpa junction and various flashpoints in Effurun.

The renewed crisis has led to several women and girls raped while residents have started parking out of the troubled areas.

Confirming the incident, the Delta State Police Spokesman, Andrew Aniamaka , who confirmed the incident however said, five persons died as against the six reported.

The Delta Police Public Relations Officer, also denied the allegation that security personnel were responsible for the victims deaths.
