Abuja: The Presidency, through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement, has announced the appointment of new executives to lead the SDGs National Students Council. The announcement was made in a statement by the National Coordinator of the council, Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the council is chaired by Comrade Sunday Asefon, who also serves as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement. The council is focused on promoting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically in the area of quality education. It aims to engage and mobilize students across Nigeria to advocate for sustainable development through initiatives and partnerships.
The council plans to collaborate with various stakeholders in both the public and private sectors, including diplomatic missions and international development organizations, to enhance SDG awareness and implementation among Nigerian students. It will also work with national student bodies such as the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Association of University Students (NAUS), National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), and the National Association of Colleges of Education Students (NANCES).
The newly appointed executives include Ismail Lawanson as Deputy National Coordinator, Abdulrasheed Mubarak as National Secretary, Stephen Omatule as National Programme/Project Coordinator, and Cynthia Agubama as National Treasurer. Additional appointees are Elizabeth Adepoju as National Gender/Advocacy Officer, Ayuba Dhikirullahi representing NANCES, Ogidan Ibukun representing NAPS, and Joel Ogwuche representing NAUS.
The new executives have pledged to implement projects aimed at improving student welfare and advancing the SDGs in Nigeria. They also committed to maintaining transparency, accountability, and effective service delivery in their roles.
