President Buhari assures workers of improved welfare

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerian workers that the government will continue to do its best towards enhancing their welfare.

In his address to the workers as they mark the 2017 Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, the President said this government will continue to do all at its disposal to better the lots of all Nigerians and more importantly to provide a commensurate welfare for all Nigerian workers.

The Nigerian leader commended that the steadfastness of the organized labour for this year’s celebration was observed under a peaceful and harmonious industrial relations atmosphere.

Minimum Wage

Commenting on the workers’ request for a new minimum wage, in line with present economic realities, President Buhari said government will ensure it implements the recommendations of the committee saddled with the responsibility of looking into the matter.

As you are aware, my administration set up a government cum labour committee on minimum wage, sequel to the request made by the organized labour on new minimum wage and palliatives to cushion the effects of the sharp increase in the pump price of petroleum products.

Following the committee’s report, which was submitted on 6th of April 2017, government will take the necessary steps to implement the final recommendations of the committee, as it relates to a new minimum wage and palliatives, in order to reduce the discomfort currently being experienced by the Nigerian working class, the President assured the workers.

Needed Support

President Buhari used the opportunity to call on the workers to support the administration in its quest to move the country forward.

Let me call on all Nigerian workers to join hands with this administration to build an egalitarian society that we all should be proud of as I wish you happy workers day, he said.

He appreciated the workers’ show of support and solidarity for his administration, especially on the fight against corruption.

Fellow Comrades, let me express my deepest appreciation for your show of support, solidarity and encouragement to my administration especially in the fight against corruption, which had been the bane of our sustainable economic development, he said.

President Buhari urged the organized labour to encourage its members to embrace the new doctrine of honesty, transparency, accountability, and probity in doing government business.

He sued for the sustenance of a harmonious working relationship, in order to give room for development and general improvement in the lives of Nigerians.
