Cairo: Prof. Benedict Oramah, the outgoing President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), received accolades for his leadership during a Farewell and Investiture Ceremony at the St. Regis Al Masa Convention Centre in Cairo, Egypt. Oramah was praised for his ability to transform bold ideas into tangible progress for Africa.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event, themed ‘Decades of Impact as Building Blocks for a Prosperous Future,’ marked a pivotal moment for both Afreximbank and the broader African community, celebrating Oramah’s achievements. The ceremony also signaled a new era with the incoming president, Dr. George Elombi, set to lead the bank.
Mr. Jean-Louis Ekra, a former Afreximbank President, lauded Oramah as a visionary leader in African development finance. He highlighted Oramah’s impressive command of banking and finance since joining the bank in 1996 as an executive vice-president, despite his background in agricultural economics. Ekra noted that Oramah had far exceeded expectations during his tenure.
Dr. George Elombi, the incoming President, praised Oramah for transforming Afreximbank into what he called “Africa’s development supermarket.” Elombi commended Oramah’s clear vision and determination to accelerate Africa’s trade and deepen economic integration on the continent.
Mr. Aliko Dangote, Founder and President/Chief Executive of Dangote Group, described Oramah as a leader who makes the impossible possible, recognizing his contributions to realizing African dreams and aspirations through Afreximbank. Various dignitaries and leaders echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging Oramah’s legacy and influence.
The event highlighted Oramah’s key achievements, including the establishment of specialized entities such as the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA), the Project Preparation Facility, and the Africa Medical Centre of Excellence. These initiatives contributed to building a more sustainable economic foundation for Africa.
As Oramah steps down, he urged his team to remain steadfast in their mission and support Dr. Elombi, his successor. He emphasized the opportunity they have to contribute to Africa’s development, urging them to be courageous and loyal in their continued efforts.
