Radio Day: NGO donates radio sets to rural women

A Non Governmental Organization (NGO), Foundation for the Protection of Women and Children In Nigeria, has Empowered 50 rural dwellers and blind women with radio sets, to enable them have access to information around the World.

The Founder of the NGO, Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani, said the gesture was to celebrate the World International Radio Day.

She said, for easy access to information around the globe, we chose to distribute the radio to women residing at the rural areas and some blind women residing at Kaduna metropolis.

The reason for empowering the Northern rural and other blind women in the region, was for them to be informed about their basic rights, saying, they are not properly informed compared to their Southern counterparts, she stressed.

According to Ramatu, despite the arrival of mobile phones and similar technologies growing across African countries dayby-day, radio remains a vital way of sharing news and communication in many ways.

She noted that Radio remains accessible when other modes of communication fail, especially in case of emergencies

There are about thirty basic human rights they need to know which can only be accessed by listening to radio, they include; the right to education, right to life, right to privacy, right to asylum, right to a Nationality and social security, amongst others she explained.

Ramatu further explained that, Radio is an empowerment, a form of education and enlightenment as it enables people to have access to information and opportunity to express themselves in various ways through phone calls, and social media.

She noted that, radio has for decades been the only medium where people in the North receive information when compared to other media.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Wasila Isah, a blind woman who resides at Rigasa in Igabi local Government of Kaduna expressed joy over the donation, saying radio is her companion at all times.

Also contributing Malama Aisha Abbas, another blind woman who received the 12 band radio receiver said ,with this radio we will know what is happening around our communities.
