Reps approve card reader for 2019 elections

The Nigeria House of Representatives has approved smart card reader as the only form for conducting the 2019 elections.

The decision which was reached during the consideration of report of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, rejected the use of manual voting in the election.

The amendments into Electoral Act 2010 according to the report is to among others make the Electoral Process full prof by making the Card Reader the credible means of Voter Accreditation and Voting and provide for strict compliance to election guidelines and manual so as to enhance transparency and efficiency.

The session which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Lasun Yusuf said where it was imminent that the card reader has malfunctioned in a particular unit or ward, such an election is to be suspended and rescheduled within 24 hours.

In the case of death of a governorship candidate during election, the party concerned, is to organize a fresh primary.

The amendment to the electoral act was to address certain challenges experienced in 2015 particularly in Kogi State where the APC candidate died in between the election.

The seeks to amend section 33 and 36 of the Electoral Act to provide a framework that will enable a Vice Presidential Candidate or Deputy Gubernatorial Candidate to conclude the poll where the nominated candidate for a political office of a President or the Governor of a State dies. The report indicated.
