Post: Richard Akinnola Calls for Enhanced Documentation of Nigeria’s Environmental History

Accra:Nigerian journalist and lawyer Richard Akinnola has emphasized the need for comprehensive documentation of Nigeria’s environmental struggles, particularly the Ogoni movement.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Akinnola made these remarks during a Book Day event organized by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF). He stressed that failure to document these struggles could lead to distorted historical accounts for future generations.

Akinnola highlighted the importance of preserving the environmental campaigns of the Ogoni people and the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) as vital parts of Nigeria’s history. He argued that journalists, lawyers, and activists have a duty to record these significant movements to help younger Nigerians understand their historical context.

He advocated for increased advocacy and public-interest litigation regarding environmental issues and called for collaboration between environmental groups and legal organizations to address environmental law violations. Akinnola also underscored the necessity of documenting political, legal, and human rights history to prevent the distortion of significant events.

Reflecting on his career, Akinnola shared his experiences documenting major events, such as the trial and execution of environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and other Ogoni leaders. He also recalled his own abduction in 1996 and the assassination of Dele Giwa, emphasizing the importance of preserving these historical records.

Dr. Nnimmo Bassey, Executive Director of HOMEF, supported Akinnola’s call for documentation and urged young people to engage with Nigeria’s history. He highlighted the need to adapt knowledge-sharing to modern consumption patterns, using digital and visual platforms alongside traditional books to reach broader audiences. HOMEF’s cultural series, which includes poetry, films, and animation, aims to make environmental and social justice topics accessible to diverse audiences.
