Gwagwalada: The District Governor of Rotary International District 9111, Henry Akinyele, has emphasized the importance of immunizing children aged zero to five years as a critical measure in maintaining a polio-free future for the world. Akinyele’s remarks were made during a mass sensitization and immunization event for children in Gwagwalada, commemorating the 2025 World Polio Day.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the theme for the 2025 World Polio Day is ‘Finishing the Job: Our Legacy for a Polio-Free World.’ The district governor highlighted Rotary Club’s longstanding commitment to eradicating polio, a life-threatening disease caused by the poliovirus. Akinyele noted that Rotary Club has been at the forefront of this battle for over three decades, recognizing the virus’s deadly nature and the importance of its eradication worldwide.
Akinyele pointed out that while Nigeria has successfully maintained zero polio cases, the disease remains a threat in regions like Afghanistan and Pakistan. This ongoing risk is why Rotary Club continues to conduct mass immunization campaigns globally. During the event in Gwagwalada, Akinyele personally administered the polio vaccine to children and emphasized the club’s commitment to vaccinating as many children as possible within the community.
Addressing concerns about vaccine safety, Akinyele refuted myths suggesting vaccines are used to control population growth, urging mothers to vaccinate their children to prevent poliomyelitis. He also highlighted that there is no governmental funding involved, with Rotary International and its members solely funding the vaccines.
Rotary member Kenny Okorie added that the immunization exercise is a significant project for Rotary International, demonstrating the organization’s dedication to children’s health. Okorie stressed the importance of ensuring every child is vaccinated to prevent the deformities associated with polio, expressing satisfaction with the turnout of mothers participating in the initiative.
Mrs. Doreen Chat, a mother of one of the beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude towards Rotary International for the initiative, acknowledging its positive impact on their community. The News Agency of Nigeria further reports that World Polio Day is observed every October 24 to raise awareness about the vital role of polio vaccination in protecting children from this debilitating disease.
