Sanusi Advocates for Recording Nigerian History to Preserve Legacy

Abuja: The 16th Emir of Kano, His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, has emphasized the importance for Nigerians to document the lives and legacies of influential figures in society. He cautioned that if Nigerians do not take the initiative to record their history, others might do it for them.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Sanusi made this statement during the public presentation of two books authored by Dr. Munzali Dantata, titled “Behind the City Wall” and “Aminu Dantata and the Life and Times of a Nigerian Entrepreneur,” held in Abuja. Serving as the Father of the Day, the Emir highlighted the necessity of preserving Kano’s rich commercial and cultural heritage through such works.

Sanusi stressed the significance of writing their own stories, especially in regions that often neglect this practice. He mentioned that the history of Kano remains incomplete without acknowledging the contributions of the business and commercial families that have contributed to its economy over the centuries. Biographies such as these, he said, offer insights into the broader narrative of society.

He also shared a personal anecdote about his late father and the late Alhaji Aminu Dantata, recalling Dantata’s defining generosity. Sanusi expressed his gratitude towards those who showed kindness to his parents and emphasized the broader celebration of Kano’s excellence in scholarship, commerce, and tradition.

Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who was present as the Chief Launcher, praised Munzali Dantata’s contributions to intellectual discourse. Saraki remarked on Munzali’s deep understanding of society and his dedication to education and knowledge. He encouraged young Nigerians to follow Munzali’s example, underscoring that knowledge is a powerful tool for fostering a fair and progressive society.

In a goodwill message conveyed on behalf of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, the Commissioner for Commerce, Alhaji Salihu Sagagi, labeled the books as modern literary works that capture memory, identity, and heritage. He reflected on Kano’s longstanding reputation as a hub for commerce, scholarship, and culture. Sagagi also paid homage to the late Alhaji Aminu Dantata, celebrating him as one of Nigeria’s greatest entrepreneurs and philanthropists, whose life was marked by vision, discipline, and generosity.
