Lagos: Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State emphasized the importance of collaboration and quality assurance in integrating indigenous designs into global sectors such as construction, infrastructure, and tourism. At the Ecobank Build and Design Expo held at the Ecobank Pan African Centre in Victoria Island, Sanwo-Olu discussed the need for innovative, environmentally friendly designs that benefit all citizens and future generations.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Sanwo-Olu stated that the expo theme, ‘How We Build, How We Live,’ serves as a platform for showcasing excellence in design, real estate, and sustainable materials. He emphasized that skilled professionals, supportive policies, and sustainable financing are essential to turning visionary designs into reality.
The governor, represented by Mrs. Bukola Agbaminoja, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board, urged professionals to focus on designs that minimize environmental impact and embrace energy efficiency. He commended Ecobank for elevating the work of young professionals and small businesses in the industry.
Panelists at the event highlighted the need for collaboration, standardization, and strategic government support to make local designs globally competitive while preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage. Discussions centered around the topic ‘Knowledge Exchange- International Vs. Local: The Sourcing Question For Interior Design.’
Tola Akerele, CEO of National Theatre Nigeria, stressed the importance of investing in people and conducting research to refine local products to meet international standards. Aisha Lawal, CEO of Lash Interiors, discussed the challenges of material sourcing and the importance of quality assurance in attracting global buyers.
Architect Adeyemi Shokunbi highlighted the potential of Nigerian designs and the resistance faced from local institutions. Patrick Koshoni, CEO of Patrick Waheed Design Consultancy, emphasized the global relevance of Nigerian designs without western influence and the importance of incorporating local culture into design concepts.
The President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Mobolaji Adeniyi, called for collaboration and standardization across fields to improve the quality of Nigerian products. She thanked Ecobank for the expo, which featured more than 60 global and local exhibitors, and pledged the support of the NIA in promoting continuous quality designs.
