Abuja: The senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District, Sen. Joseph Ikpea (APC-Edo), has called for significant security reforms to address the ongoing challenges in the country. Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, Ikpea emphasized his support for state policing and regionalized security operations as essential measures to tackle insecurity.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the lawmaker highlighted the importance of collective responsibility, urging Nigerians from all walks of life to contribute to community safety. He stressed that the government alone cannot solve the nation’s security issues and encouraged citizens to engage in responsible and ethical conduct within their communities.
Ikpea identified insecurity as a major challenge and acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address the problem. He noted that security is vital for both peace and economic growth, citing improvements in the economy under the current administration. He also cautioned against the political exploitation of security issues ahead of the 2027 elections, expressing confidence in the measures being implemented to improve security.
Reflecting on his political career, Ikpea shared his commitment to public service and accountability. He recounted his experience as a council chairman, where he ensured the timely payment of salaries despite limited resources. Ikpea stated his intention to introduce a bill that would utilize the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to provide graduates with opportunities in military and paramilitary service, aiming to address youth unemployment and enhance national security.
The senator concluded by emphasizing that this initiative would reduce recruitment costs, create a database of trained personnel, and ensure that security officers are closely connected to the communities they serve.
