Post: SETPOM Calls for AI Integration to Combat Pollution in Nigeria

Lagos:The Society for Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Mitigation (SETPOM), a Non-profit Governmental Organisation, has called for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into environmental management strategies in Nigeria. The aim is to combat pollution and protect ecosystems, as stated by the organisation’s President, Dr. Idowu Aneyo, during the society’s international conference in Lagos.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the three-day conference was themed ‘Driving Environmental Security, Innovation, and Resilience through AI, Research, Industry, and Regulation for Global Livelihoods’. Dr. Aneyo highlighted the impact of human activities on ecosystems and emphasized the need for innovative technologies and sustainable practices to protect biodiversity and enhance environmental resilience.

Dr. Aneyo, who is also a lecturer in the Department of Zoology at the University of Lagos, explained that AI and machine learning could enhance environmental monitoring, predict ecological disruptions, and support timely interventions. She advocated for a proactive approach in analyzing environmental data, which would help minimize damage to ecosystems and promote sustainability through informed decision-making and resource management.

The conference also addressed public cooperation in environmental protection, with Dr. Aneyo noting that regulations exist, particularly in Lagos State, but human acceptance of necessary changes is crucial.

Environmental activist Dr. Desmond Majekodunmi warned about the threats posed by rising sea levels and climate change, which could affect parts of Lagos by 2050. He attributed worsening environmental degradation to factors such as greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, pollution, and biodiversity loss, and called for collective action to address the climate crisis.

Prof. Ganiu Oyechibo, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences at UNILAG, remarked on the severe damage human activities have caused to natural resources and ecological balance. He stressed the importance of identifying and understanding the damage to develop practical solutions.

The conference also featured a green essay competition for students, with winners announced in both junior and senior categories.
